An aeroplane, a burning skyline and a sky full of enemy fighters. Battle Over Berlin is a side-on aerial dogfight from FreeOnlineGames, released in 2010, and it keeps to the rules its own instruction screen sets out: no jets, no computers, no heat-seeking missiles -- just machine guns, bombs and the wind in your struts. Point the nose, work the throttle and shoot down whatever comes at you, marking up a score and a rank as the fight goes on.

The ruined city scrolls past as the battle moves, with an enemy bar and a player bar along the bottom and the rank climbing from rookie upward. It takes two players on one keyboard as readily as one, which is how an arcade like this was usually played, and the game's own description calls it aerial combat in its purest form. The flight model is simple enough that the boast is fair.
