Submachine is a point-and-click escape game, and it is the first of the ten Mateusz Skutnik went on to make. You are a man with no memory inside an installation of pipes, valves, ladders and lights, and there is no inventory to fight with -- you look, you click, you turn a wheel, and a door that was locked is open. Newgrounds' own line for it is the whole pitch: 'Submachine Extended Version; point and click escape game; walk around rooms and try to find an exit out of this installation.' Its author signs the movie itself -- the strings inside carry mailto:[email protected], the domain Skutnik published from -- and the game's reputation rests on atmosphere rather than a score: a hand-drawn industrial maze, a hum, and puzzles that reward reading the room. The archive held its movie in its own upload tree without ever making a page of it -- one of 599 movies in itkid.com/files/flash/ that no node referenced.
